In the midst of ongoing tensions with Iran, President Donald Trump has called on Americans to brace for slightly increased gasoline prices, linking the situation to the strategic disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. At a rally held in New York, Trump emphasized that the minor rise in fuel costs is a justifiable sacrifice in the broader effort to prevent Iran from developing nuclear capabilities. He also floated the idea of potentially declaring the Strait of Hormuz as a U.S. territory, contingent upon a successful contention with Iran.
The Iranian government has dismissed Trump’s statements, maintaining that control over the waterway remains firmly in their hands. Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister, stated that Tehran will sustain its blockade until the U.S. acknowledges what he termed as its defeat. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has indicated that Tehran is not ready to resume negotiations with Washington, asserting that the resumption of shipping through the strait hinges on the U.S. meeting Iran’s stipulated conditions.
The standoff has significantly disrupted the flow of tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical conduit for global oil and natural gas supplies. This uncertainty has contributed to increased crude oil prices, subsequently escalating the pressure on fuel costs worldwide. In the U.S., the average gasoline price has climbed to approximately $4.08 per gallon, marking an increase of about 29% compared to the previous year. Concurrently, Brent crude prices are on the verge of a notable weekly rise.
These economic ripples are also being felt within Iran. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has attributed the nation’s rising inflation to the U.S. blockade, along with sanctions and restrictions affecting Iranian oil exports. The Trump administration, on its part, has signaled the possibility of additional financial sanctions against Tehran, as diplomatic efforts to broker a ceasefire remain at an impasse.
