Instead, Ukraine will be represented by a delegation led by Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko at the event, which is being held in Gdańsk. The conference aims to rally international backing and investment for Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction.
The root of the discord lies in Zelenskyy’s recent approval to name a Ukrainian military unit after the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). While many Ukrainians regard the UPA as part of their struggle for independence, its dark association with the death of thousands of Poles during World War II has sparked controversy in Poland. Polish officials, including President Karol Nawrocki, have voiced their disapproval, accusing Ukraine of disregarding historical grievances. This conflict has strained the historically cooperative relationship between the two nations, which has been especially crucial since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Defending his decision, Zelenskyy emphasized the right of military units to select names that reflect Ukrainian history. He also cautioned that political disputes could undermine the cooperation between Ukraine and Poland, which remains vital amid ongoing security concerns in the region. The naming issue, therefore, has grown beyond a mere historical debate, threatening to impact the strategic alliance formed in response to external threats.
In response to these tensions, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has called for calm and appealed to both nations to de-escalate the situation, stressing that such disagreements should not harm their strategic partnership. European officials have also weighed in, cautioning that any deterioration in Ukraine-Poland relations could inadvertently play into Russia’s hands.
