Meta has introduced a new feature, Muse Image, on Instagram that leverages AI to generate images, which has ignited privacy debates. This tool allows users to use photos from public Instagram profiles to create customized AI-generated images. Privacy advocates are raising concerns that users may not be fully aware their publicly shared photos could be utilized in this manner, as the feature is activated by default.
According to Meta, Muse Image incorporates several safety measures, ensuring private accounts and users below the age of 18 are automatically excluded from this AI image generation process. Users with public accounts, however, can opt out of this feature by adjusting their privacy settings under the “Sharing and Reuse” section. Despite these measures, privacy experts argue that the opt-out option is not easily accessible and contend that users should have been given the choice to opt in rather than having their content automatically available for AI usage.
Further concerns have been voiced by advocates who highlight the potential for images of children to be included in AI-generated content. This issue arises from photos posted by adults that might contain children, posing a risk despite the existing protections for accounts belonging to minors.
Meta has assured that Muse Image is equipped with safeguards to mitigate misuse and provides users the ability to report any inappropriate AI-generated images. Currently, the feature is accessible via the Meta AI app, Instagram Stories within the United States, and WhatsApp in certain countries, with plans for broader distribution in the future.
