While stress is often linked to feelings of anxiety and burnout, health professionals highlight that not all stress is detrimental. There exists a type of stress, known as eustress or positive stress, that can actually be beneficial in certain situations. This manageable, short-term stress can enhance concentration, elevate motivation, and improve performance when individuals are confronted with significant challenges.
Farheen Belgaumwala, a certified happiness coach, notes that this healthy form of stress typically arises before pivotal events such as job interviews, public speaking engagements, exams, or while acquiring new skills. Though it may induce temporary physical reactions like a rapid heartbeat or sweaty palms, this kind of stress is conducive to sharpening focus, aiding in problem-solving, and often bolsters confidence once the hurdle is overcome.
The real issue surfaces when stress persists over the long term without adequate recovery periods. Continuous stress stemming from factors such as heavy workloads, uncertainty, unrealistic demands, poor communication, or insufficient emotional support can gradually take a toll on both physical and mental health. Without proper recovery, chronic stress can diminish productivity, compromise emotional resilience, and heighten the risk of burnout.
Experts emphasize that the body often signals excessive stress before individuals become fully aware of it. Symptoms such as persistent fatigue, sleep disturbances, frequent headaches, irritability, difficulty concentrating, emotional exhaustion, and a perpetual sense of tension may suggest that stress levels have become unhealthy.
Fortunately, maintaining a healthy balance doesn’t necessarily require drastic changes. Incorporating short breaks during the day, spending time outdoors, practicing deep breathing exercises, setting realistic boundaries, ensuring adequate sleep, and seeking support from trusted friends, family, or mental health professionals can effectively manage stress. Understanding the distinction between beneficial and harmful stress enables individuals to remain productive while safeguarding their long-term well-being.
