Chelsea has advanced to the league phase of the Women’s Champions League after defeating Real Sociedad 1-0, securing a 6-2 victory on aggregate in their third-round qualifying match. The decisive goal came from Keira Walsh early in the second half, who scored in the 54th minute by converting a corner kick, effectively quashing any potential comeback by Real Sociedad.
The London side entered the second leg with a significant 5-2 lead from the first encounter. Yet, despite this advantage, coach Sonia Bompastor’s team had difficulty showcasing their usual attacking prowess in San Sebastián. Real Sociedad presented a formidable challenge, defending with organization and discipline, which made it tough for Chelsea to create clear opportunities in the first half. Ellie Carpenter posed the main threat from the right flank, but Chelsea struggled to capitalize on her crosses.
Before Walsh’s goal, Aggie Beever-Jones nearly scored, only to see her shot comfortably stopped by Real Sociedad’s goalkeeper Julia Arrula. Walsh’s breakthrough moments later gave Chelsea firm control of the match. Bompastor took the opportunity to rotate her squad, with the Women’s Super League opener against Aston Villa looming, offering valuable playing time to various team members and younger players.
Among those making their debut for Chelsea were new signings Nelly Las and Giulia Dragoni, who were brought on from the bench. Additionally, 17-year-old Chloe Sarwie was given a chance to gain experience in the latter stages of the match. Although Chelsea’s performance over the two legs might not have been entirely convincing, they achieved their primary goal: securing a spot in the Champions League league phase. This achievement also provided Bompastor’s squad with vital competitive minutes leading up to their domestic season’s start.
As for Real Sociedad, their inability to overturn the deficit from the first leg means they will now compete in the Europa League. Despite their organized and spirited efforts, they were unable to progress in the Champions League.
