In response to a notable increase in ADHD and autism diagnoses among children and young individuals, the Swedish government has launched a comprehensive national inquiry. This investigation aims to uncover the underlying reasons for the surge in neurodevelopmental conditions and seeks to propose enhancements for the support systems available to these individuals and their families.
The initiative is spearheaded by Mathias Wahlsten, Director General of the Swedish Unemployment Insurance Inspectorate, who has been appointed to lead the delegation. The inquiry will delve into the contributing factors to the rising number of diagnoses and will focus on suggesting improvements that span across education, healthcare, leisure activities, and the transition into employment. The results and recommendations from this inquiry are anticipated to be submitted by December 1, 2027.
Jakob Forssmed, the Minister for Social Affairs, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating that the objective is to ensure children and young people with neuropsychiatric conditions receive adequate support. The ultimate goal is to enable these individuals to achieve their full potential and to be fully integrated into society.
